Australia’s elected ruler promises policy change | World | DW

Australian Prime Minister-elect Anthony Albanese announced this Sunday (22/522) that he will meet individually with the leaders of the United States, Japan and India in Tokyo one day after being sworn in.

“This allows us to send a message to the world that there is a new government,” he told reporters after announcing the victory of the centre-left Labor Party in Saturday’s election.

“There will be changes in politics, especially in relation to climate change and our relationship with the world on this issue,” said the 59-year-old leader, who vowed to accelerate Australia’s actions to reduce its carbon emissions.

Albanese said he and key members of his team would be sworn in on Monday.

The next day he promised to attend the Tokyo Summit of Australia, India, Japan and the United States.

Albanese said at the meeting he would meet individually with US President Joe Biden and the Prime Ministers of Japan, Fumio Kishida, and India, Narendra Modi.

“Tonight, the Australian people have voted for change. I am honored by this victory and I am honored to have this opportunity to serve,” Albanese said, before confirming that the main mission of his government team is to unite with Australia.

Foreign policy

“Every parent wants more for the next generation than they ever had and I hope my journey in life inspires Australians to reach for the stars,” she said.

One of the distinguishing parts of his Labor Party proposal in the campaign is foreign policy. Albanese has vowed to rebuild fractured ties with France, which infuriated Morrison by scrapping a $90 billion submarine deal in favor of the so-called AUKUS security pact with the United States and Britain.

In fact, and already in the chapter on international reactions, the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has become the first foreign leader to congratulate the Alba people on his victory.

“Our countries have a long history and a bright future together. As a prosperous and like-minded democracy, we work every day to make the world a better, safer, greener and more prosperous place,” he said in a statement. .

“As we reap the rewards of our comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, the AUKUS partnership and the unparalleled closeness between the British and Australian people, we do so knowing that the only distance between us is geographic,” he added.
