At the ANM business conference, investors from Canada, Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom and Colombia learned about the small and medium-sized mining projects being carried out in the Boyacá and Cundinamarca departments.
National and international bidders, investors and buyers of precious metals and gems meet this Thursday, May 26, at the ‘Emerald Business Round Table’, a virtual stage where the potential and quality of Colombian emeralds are concentrated in the eastern and western belts in the center of the country.
According to the National Mining Agency (ANM), the organizer of the event, the mining authority is continuing its promotion strategy through international business roundtables, which are aimed at investors and potential buyers of mining projects in the country.
“The National Mining Agency adopted the business loop as a platform that facilitates bringing Colombia’s mineral supplies and mining projects closer to national and international demand. These spaces assist in the relationship of producers with mining projects and potential markets to identify new opportunities for the commercialization of Colombian minerals or investment in projects in the country,” said ANM president Juan Miguel Durán.
During the business round, important deals were presented with the Malacara, Palomas and El Tinajo mining projects in the Cundinamarca department. Likewise, the mining offerings of Geominc SA, Norcol Colombia SAS – Esmeraldas de Coscuez and CI Emerald Mart SAS from the Boyacá department are featured.
“It should be emphasized that the projects submitted to investors are valid in the National Mining List and meet all the requirements set out to carry out exploration, construction and assembly and exploitation tasks, according to the stage of their contract,” they said in a statement.
There are 1,025 mining titles applicable to this precious stone
Currently, ANM registered 1,025 valid mining titles for emeralds in the national territory and 422 applications are in progress.
“Colombia is currently the largest producer of high quality emeralds in the world, thanks to its hydrothermal sedimentary origin which provides characteristics such as brightness, transparency, colour, play of light and optimum hardness, qualities that have allowed Colombian emeralds to be recognized and desired by world comparators”, they explained at the National Mining Agency.
The main areas of exploitation of this precious stone are in the Boyacá and Cundinamarca departments. Notable municipalities include Muzo, Quípama, Maripí and San Pablo de Borbur in Boyacá, as well as Gachalá and Ubalá, in Cundinamarca.
“Colombian emeralds are currently an international benchmark with high acceptance in the jewelery sector around the world. Colombia is the world’s largest exporter of cut emeralds with the highest quality gems in the world. Therefore, this stone mining activity is very important for our country and region who will benefit from mining activities,” said the president of ANM.
The hydrothermal origin of Colombian emeralds is unique in the world, extraction is carried out in the eastern and western emerald belts of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes and includes the mining districts of Chivor, Gachalá and Macanal in the eastern belt, and Muzo, Coscuez, Peñas Blancas, La Palma – Yacopí and La Pita in the belt. west.
Colombian emeralds are associated with veins, hydrothermal breccias and hydraulic breccias that influence the sedimentary sequences of the Paja, Rosablanca, and Grupo Villeta formations in the East Belt and the Guavio Limestone and Macanal Shale formations in the western belt.
Exploitation of Colombian emeralds is carried out in underground operations with a modernization process and new investments in several major mining projects.
“In April 2021, the Colombian Emerald Best Practice Guide was presented, which was the result of a collaboration between Fedesmeraldas, the Colombian Resources and Reserves Commission, and the National Mining Agency. The purpose of this Guide is to guide the exploration and estimation work of mineral resources and reserves for mining rights holders and professionals of the emerald mining sector in Colombia”, they are specified in the ANM.
