Venezuela’s National Assembly on Thursday endorsed the Argentine Republic’s “legitimate claim” over the Malvinas Islands, recognizing its right to “exercise sovereignty” over these territories and calling on Britain to comply “as a matter of urgency” by the resolution. ordered by the United Nations.

The statement on Argentina’s rights and calls for London to comply with UN resolutions were unanimously approved following presentations made by the Assembly’s Foreign Policy Commission.
The statement ratified “fully the resolutions and declarations issued by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC)” on this issue and reaffirmed “the support of the existing regional blocs in Latin America and the Caribbean for the purposes of Argentina.”
In this sense, the MPs urged the UK “to continue negotiations on sovereignty with Argentina” and stated “as a matter of urgency that” the UK “authorities” comply with the resolutions issued by the United Nations and adhere to the basic principles of International Law. .
In the Assembly, Venezuelan legislators recalled through reading the document that “on January 3, 1833, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland illegally occupied Malvinas, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and the maritime space and surrounding islands belonging to the Argentine Republic, and since then the two countries maintain international disputes over the territory”.
In addition, they highlighted that “on December 16, 1965, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 2065, in which it recognized the existence of a sovereignty dispute” between Argentina and the United Kingdom and invited them to “open negotiations to find a peaceful solution.”
They also acknowledged the “constructive stance and willingness to reach a peaceful and definitive solution” that Argentina had for years, stating “for the decolonization of the islands through dialogue.”
