The European Union (EU) presented the “final text” for negotiations seeking to revive the international agreement on Iran’s 2015 nuclear program, a senior EU official said Monday (8/82022).
“What is negotiable has been negotiated and is now in the final text. However, behind every technical issue and every paragraph there is a political decision to be made in the capital city,” tweeted EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell.
“If this answer is positive, then we can sign this agreement,” he added,
From Tehran, the Iranian government said it was examining the text.
“As soon as we received these ideas, we conveyed our responses and initial considerations to them, but of course this issue requires further review and additional consideration,” state news agency IRNA reported, citing an unnamed diplomat.
After months of stalemate in negotiations, diplomats from Iran, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany returned to Vienna last Thursday for another round of talks, with the aim of trying to salvage the deal.
This dialogue seeks to ensure that Tehran’s nuclear program has a civilian purpose, because despite denials, Iran has been accused of seeking to acquire atomic weapons.
