MEXICO CITY.-Mexico will have two ways of doing business with the UK: through bilateral agreements with European countries and through the Trans-Pacific Association’s Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement (TIPAT).

Britain is outside the Treaty between the European Union and Mexico (TLCUEM), because of Brexit, namely the exit from the European Union area, so Mexico must negotiate how its long-term trade relationship with this country will be.

As a result, a free trade agreement will be sought between the country and Mexico, under which the UK begins a period of consultation (since 18 May) with British businessmen and upon completion, it will call on Mexico to initiate dialogue. in an interview Luz Maria de la MoraDeputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economy.

He added that Mexico would carry out consultations when the UK country reached a conclusion and work from there.

“We will consult with the private sector once we have terms of reference to find out what their position is, we have other mechanisms through the adjoining room and through which we inform the private sector and conduct our consultations during the negotiation process,” he explained.

As for European countries that are part of TIPAT, a working group meeting is needed to analyze its entry, in which besides Mexico there will be 10 other countries that make up this pact.

“The UK asked to join TIPAT and we have rated its request positively because it is one of the major players in international trade, it is a country that shares our vision in terms of setting high international trade standards, it is a very important global economy.

“Then we believe it reinforces TIPAT that we have members like the UK in the agreement,” he said.

Brexit ends on 31 December 2020, when the transition period ends, which began in January of the same year.

So both Mexico and the UK reached a Commercial Continuity Agreement between the two countries to continue the current commercial relationship under which a new pact was made.

The country is the third most relevant destination of TLCUEM to which Mexico sends its exports, after Spain and France, where it placed $2.618 million in 2020, according to data from the Ministry of Economy.
