Liz Truss is the new British Prime Minister

Former British Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, elected as the new leader of the Conservative Party and the country’s Prime Minister, based on the results of voting within the party.

Around 200,000 ‘Tories’ voted by mail and online to choose one of two candidates for the position, as Truss competed with former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak. Following the announcement of the results, the official will travel with the then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to the royal residence of Balmoral, in Scotland, to meet a required audience with Queen Elizabeth II.

Truss’s candidacy received 81,326 votes, while Sunak received the support of 60,399 voters.

After the announcement of the results, the new prime minister said it was “an honor” to be elected and praised his predecessor, whom he called “my friend, Boris Johnson”. Addressing voters, he stated: “Thank you for placing your trust in me to lead our great Conservative Party, the largest political party on Earth.”

Truss promised that during his tenure he would lower taxes, grow the economy and find solutions to the energy crisis.

“We need to show that we will deliver in the next two years. I will present a bold plan to reduce taxes and grow our economy,” the president-elect said after the results were announced.

“I’m going to tackle the energy crisis, deal with people’s energy bills, but also with the long-term issues we have about energy supply,” he said.

The announcement sparked the start of a job transfer for Johnson, who was forced to announce his resignation in July. after months of scandals that saw support for his government evaporate.

The prime minister will still travel to Scotland to meet with Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday to formally submit his resignation. The king would then ask Truss to form a government.

Truss, a longtime leader in the race to replace Johnson, will become the Conservative’s fourth prime minister since the 2015 election. During that period, the country has bounced from one crisis to another and is now facing what is expected to be a long recession triggered by soaring inflation to 10.1% in July.
