UK lifts country’s fracking moratorium after latest events

The fear of gas shortage in the face of winter has dictated the decision

The BBC has announced in the last few hours the decision of the British authorities regarding fracking. This practice could continue in the UK, the government announced this Thursday, lifting an existing moratorium on the controversial process. The decision comes with the publication of a new scientific review of the practice by British Geological Survey (BGS). BGS concludes that there is still a limited understanding of UK shale reserves and the impact of drilling.

Fracking is a way of extracting gas and oil from shale rock.. A fracking moratorium was imposed in 2019 due to concerns about earthquakes. But with the global energy crisis worsening and world leaders scrambling to secure energy supplies, the question has been reopened. Fear of shortages has led to the lifting of the moratorium on this brutal practice.

Fracking in the UK has become a controversial issue within the local community and among MPs because of its association with minor earthquakes. Similarly, the cities around where the work is carried out also have health problems.
