Israeli startup CartiHeal’s innovative prosthesis has been acquired by a British medical technology company.
CartiHeal is an Israeli startup that recently developed the innovative Agili-C implant, a knee prosthesis that has the ability to cause regeneration of cartilage and bone, materials that are incapable of healing themselves. But the Israeli implant is based on the discovery that bone tissue located beneath cartilage can help its regeneration under certain conditions.
CartiHeal’s Agili-C implant addresses cartilage problems and osteochondral defects in the knee joint. As a result of this development, the British medical biotechnology company Smith+Nephew decided to acquire the startup for an initial consideration of 180 million dollars, which could become 330 million if the expected sales performance for the implant is verified.
Nir Altshchuler, founder and CEO of the Israeli startup, said that “this technology will really help more patients overcome knee pain. “As a leader in sports medicine and with a deep understanding of biology, Smith+Nephew is the ideal home for Agili-C.”
