The company also revealed a new drone model that will operate longer and operate in more adverse climate conditions.
Amazon announced this fifth (19th) show that it plans to expand its drone delivery program, Prime Air, to the UK and Italy next year. The company also revealed a new drone model, or MK30, that will operate longer and operate in more adverse climate conditions.
“In the future, we will integrate drones into Amazon’s delivery network, so customers have traditional delivery vans, Flex delivery vehicles, and Prime Air drones from the same location,” the company said in its announcement.
Amazon has been promising 30-minute drone deliveries for Prime members since 2013, but the program has faced several obstacles. The company currently only offers Prime Air delivery in two locations: Texas and California.
Currently, Amazon drones cannot make deliveries during storms, high winds, extreme heat or other severe weather – and only operate from 8am to 3.30pm daily. Restrictions imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) – the organization that controls United States airspace – also prevent Prime Air from flying its drones over people or roads, or cause Amazon’s next challenge.
To gain FAA approval for wider deployment in the United States, Prime Air had to add hundreds of hours of airtime without incident. However, given that Prime Air is currently operating under restricted conditions, there are concerns that there could be problems in meeting the agency’s requirements. In May of this year, Prime Air made just 100 deliveries, second only to CNBC.
New drone MK30
Amazon also previewed its new Prime Air delivery drone, which it claims can fly twice as long as current models. More importantly, the drones will be able to operate in light rain conditions and not because the Amazon has a more “diverse” climate. The company released photos of the MK30 drone, which it says will replace existing delivery drones by the end of 2024.
The MK30 is also smaller and quieter than existing Prime Air models, he told Amazon. The new drone can deliver leather objects weighing up to 2.2 kg, with delivery times typically “one hour or less”. This new drone features a “sense and avoid” feature that can help you avoid scary animals, people and property. The new design should produce a smoother sound. As reported by CNBC, Prime Air drones have experienced several accidents over the last two years.
Amazon is working with regulators and governments around the world to expand drone delivery. The United Kingdom and Italy were the first countries outside the United States to receive the Prime Air program.
