Amazon to invest in UK a number of 10.5 billion dollars in the next 5 years to develop digital services that will create thousands of jobs, the American tech giant and the British government announced.
The announcement arrived just in time for the new Labor governmentwhich promises strong economic growth to “rebuild” the country.
Investments to be allocated build, operate and maintain data centerscan “support” it creation of more than 14,000 jobs annually throughout the supply chain, the company stressed.
The operation will be performed by AWS, a subsidiary of Amazon “cloud” computing.
“This £8 billion investment marks the start of economic recovery and show that the UK is a place to do business,” UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said in a statement.
A “sovereign cloud” in the European Union
AWS announced it in the last few months multi-million dollar investments in Germany, Spain and Francethree European Union (EU) countries are discussing the formation of a “sovereign cloud” it will allow store and process data online bypassing the American tech giant.
Amazon employs 75,000 people in the UKin more than a hundred locations. The statement said that between 2010 and 2022 they would invest 56 billion pounds ($73.3 billion at current exchange rates) in the country.
Amazon is the world’s largest cloud service providerbut lags behind the other two giants in the sector, Microsoft and Google, in generative artificial intelligence (AI).
