Argentine citizens living in the UK who have the right to vote in the general elections taking place today in Argentina began voting at the country’s Consulate General in London.
Consul Carolina Pérez Colman told Télam that at 8am local time (4am in Argentina) the first voters started arriving and the influx has so far been constant throughout the morning in the city of London.
“There are 7,500 Argentines registered for this election in the UK. “A significant increase compared to the 6,200 voters in the mid-term legislative elections in 2021,” emphasized the diplomatic representative.
Pérez Colman indicated that “registered voters who can vote in this election are those who have changed their address to the UK in their DNI before April 25 2023, the deadline set by the electoral justice system.”
He also stated that the process would last until 18.00, following the same rules and regulations of the election process in Argentina.
“Three voting tables have been set up to accommodate voters, and each table manages around 2,400 voters,” explained Pérez Colman.
Apart from that, he explained, voting abroad has certain characteristics compared to Argentina, because it is optional.
“For tourists from Argentina who are currently in England, they must justify not voting, the procedure is carried out online,” he explained.
Regarding the oversight, Pérez Colman indicated that when elections close in the UK, desk authorities, who are volunteer citizens, will recount their desks in the presence of an accredited party prosecutor.
“Then they will prepare an inspection report which will be sent via diplomatic mail to Argentina for the final tally,” he added. (Télam)
