BAE Business | A third of Argentinians have purchased cryptocurrency at least once

Distraction from digital assets it became more and more obvious and, little by little, Argentinians were getting used to the new means of savings and transactions.

33% of compatriots have purchased cryptocurrency, with Bitcoin (65%) and Ethereum (41%) preferred. For 56%, the biggest motivation for acquiring crypto is as a store of value due to the volatility of the peso, second only to Nigeria (65%). After all, the main reason to trade crypto is curiosity: 62% in Argentina versus 57% worldwide average.

The data emerges from a report by technology company Consensys based on a survey made between 15,158 peopleaged between 18 and 65 years, in Argentina, Germany, Brazil, South Korea, United States, Philippines, France, India, India, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, United Kingdom, South Africa and Vietnam.

43% of those surveyed in Argentina strongly believe that crypto contributions add value to the internet, compared to 67% in Nigeria but almost 5% in Japan. On the other hand, 66% of Argentinians say they have never had an NFT, in line with global figures, and 46% say it is highly likely or very likely they will do so in the future.

In turn, 49% of Argentinians confirmed that the future of money is one of the main concepts they associate with cryptocurrencies, while only 15% of Brits and 17% of Germans say the same.

42% of Argentinians say they are worried about scams and scams related to the crypto world, compared to 19% in the United States and only 12% in Japan. 49% of respondents in countries believe that cryptocurrencies are a green technology, this percentage drops to 25% in France and only 19% in the UK.

On the other hand, more than half of Argentinians do not trust the traditional financial system and almost 30% believe it is necessary to completely change it, the highest number of all countries. Besides that, four in ten believe that the traditional banking and financial system can improve. In 2022, only two out of ten respondents would agree with this premise.

In Argentina, cryptocurrencies are associated with the future of a new financial ecosystem. Regarding regulations, almost 30% believe that cryptocurrencies should be strictly regulated, which represents growth compared to 2022 data (16%), although it is still far below the global average (42%) driven by all countries such as Indonesia (53% ) and Vietnam (56%). The majority (38%) prefer regulations that protect investors.

Knowledge

94% of Argentinians surveyed said they are familiar with the existence of cryptocurrencies, exceeding the world average (92%). Additionally, over a third of people who have heard of cryptos believe they have the potential to be the future of money (37%) and the future of digital property (31%), while a smaller percentage associated cryptocurrencies with “speculation” (25%) and “fraud” (26%).

67% of people believe they should own the things they create on the internet. Only 38% say they are adequately compensated for the value and creativity they provide.

83% of respondents said that data privacy is important70% believe they should share in the profits companies make from their personal data and 79% want more control over their online identity.

Finally, only 41% of women surveyed said they know anything about crypto, compared to 58% of men. In the same sense, half of the women stated that they were not sure that they had understood how cryptocurrencies work, whereas for men the rate was reduced to 35 percent.
