In one of his first public appearances since his father died Alberto Bailleresnew president of Grupo BAL, Alejandro Bailleresrelaunched this Monday one of the most ambitious projects envisioned by the ITAM Governing Board in recent decades.
It is a renovated center for promoting entrepreneurs called Epic Lab, an original business incubator and accelerator that will increase the reach of emerging companies in university-academic activities.
ITAM has distinguished itself in recent years as it has been completely transformed to balance the attributes of academic excellence with human excellence.
Added to this new origin is this renovated entrepreneurship hub, where hundreds of students, teachers, mentors, alumni and allies will attend to explode projects with high social impact.
Its renewed vocation will be transversal across all disciplines and will sponsor the creation of multidisciplinary teams. In fact, the director of Epic Lab, Daniela Ruiz Massieuannounced alliances with UNAM’s School of Chemistry and with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to call for joint work.
An iconic example of what the center can achieve is the startup Propel Modern Foods, which was launched by students joel gonzalez, Jayat Gonzales Y Damian Tapia, whose business model is to identify and create demand for invasive species in the fisheries sector, which doubles the income of small-scale fishers and helps regenerate the environment in different parts of the country. The project uses artificial intelligence and was awarded the UK Hult Prize last year, surpassing 70,000 other projects from around the world.
Baillères said Monday that his priority as president of ITAM is “in the development and prosperity of the Institute”, which is why Epic Lab is strategic for ITAM. He explained that “our strategic commitment is to make a difference in our country in the field of high-impact technology entrepreneurship and in entrepreneurship with social causes.”
This center is one of the future chancellor’s most relevant commitments Arturo Fernandezwho have sponsored it since the beginning.
During the relaunch, Fernández spoke about the case for Propel Modern Foods with great pride for the kind of social entrepreneurship it demonstrates and for the many awards it has amassed. Nothing less: apart from Hult, he also won the 2022 university innovation award from ILAN (Israel + Latin America Network) a few weeks ago.
