Britain chose Guyana for efforts to preserve its natural resources

San Juan, February 26. A British minister recognized the South American nation of Guyana for its efforts to conserve its forests and natural resources for having one of the lowest deforestation rates in the world, local media reported Sunday.

This was made clear by the British Minister of State for Overseas Territories, Commonwealth of Nations, Energy, Climate and Environment, Zac Goldsmith, after a two-day visit to Guyana, in particular to the Territory of Essequibo, which borders Venezuela. .

There, Goldsmith assured that Guyana had one of the best forest management systems in the world.

“You have set an example for the world. Also, you have given a gift to the world, because you have given us something we can build on,” said Goldsmith.

The official explained to residents of the Guyana region that it is people who must restore the bad relationship they have with natural resources to deal with the climate crisis.

“If we want to solve the climate crisis, of course we need technology, clean energy and clean transportation, but we will never solve this problem if we don’t solve our relationship with nature,” he said.

“That’s why we are here. But I also have to recognize you, because what you do is very important. You are a world leader, you have protected nature in a way that most countries, including mine, have not,” he acknowledged. .

Goldsmith, in turn, indicated that Britain was looking for opportunities in Guyana to strengthen relations between the two countries.

As he explained, this opportunity was specifically to learn how the two countries can help each other in Guyana’s efforts to protect its nature, but also to learn from the South American country and help neighboring countries, as well as educate themselves and bring that knowledge to the country. other.
