British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appointed one of his predecessors, David Cameron, as foreign secretary, as part of a surprise government reshuffle that seeks to propel the Conservative Party into the political center as it slumps in opinion polls ahead of next year’s election. .

Cameron, a moderate conservative who stepped down as prime minister after Britain voted to leave the European Union, something he opposed, will now take up one of the most senior posts in government after seven years in the political wilderness. He is the first former British prime minister to return to a cabinet position in more than 50 years.

The unexpected move is widely seen by political analysts as part of Sunak’s efforts to reorganize the Conservative Party, which has been in power for 13 years but lags far behind the opposition Labor Party.

Interior Minister Suella Braverman, who has long supported the party’s right wing, was fired after weeks of controversy over the government’s handling of demonstrations against Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Braverman described pro-Palestinian demonstrations as “hate marches” and called for a ban last weekend, saying British police were biased against left-wing groups. James Cleverly, Cameron’s predecessor as foreign secretary, was announced as his replacement.
