Canada’s spy agency said Friday it was investigating credible death threats against people in Canada from Iran, days after Britain made similar accusations against the Islamic regime.
The Canadian Intelligence Service (CSIS) “is actively investigating several death threats from the Islamic Republic of Iran based on credible information,” Eric Balsam, a spokesman for CSIS, told AFP.
“Ultimately, this hostile activity and foreign interference undermines the security of Canada and Canadians, and our democratic values and sovereignty,” he added.
No details of the investigation were released, but Balsam said the agency was working closely with international partners.
CSIS is also aware that Iran is monitoring and intimidating people in Canada, including members of the Iranian diaspora, to “silence those who speak openly against” the regime, it added.
Last week, the British government accused Tehran of threatening the lives of UK-based journalists.
“Today I have summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires after journalists working in the UK received direct death threats from Iran,” UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly tweeted at the time.
