Caught in a 200 km/h zone 80 – emergency rights of way claimed
A man (27) has been sentenced to 65 days in prison without parole after driving at 200 km/h in zone 80 on the E134 over Haukelifjell last fall.
On the afternoon of September 8, the man was taken under laser control on the straight section between the Vågslid tunnel and the Haukeli tunnel.
The man was on his way across the mountains from Austlandet and was going to Haugesund. Police end speed control to follow drivers.
In Haukelitunnelen there was construction work and the convoy was driving in a lead car, so the police took the 27 year old and took his driver’s license from him.
He then followed them to a rest area where he was told to wait so his wife could pick him up. Nevertheless, he leaves from there and the police have to look for him. He managed to drive the 56 kilometers to Vinje before being stopped again by police.
In court, the man demanded emergency justice. He explained that he was struggling mentally and on the way he had an anxiety attack.
When he saw the flashing lights of the lead car in Haukelitunnelen, he stepped on the gas and drove “as fast as he could to get there to get people’s help”.
Furthermore, the man said that he left the resting place after that because he was afraid that he would die. He wore only shorts and a light jacket in the cold, and had little fuel in the car. The court did not believe the man’s explanation.
He also lost his driver’s license for three years and 11 months. The Hordaland District Court believed it was upsetting that the man had previously been arrested for reckless driving.
