BBC News has echoed the recommendations made by the UK government to residents. People are advised to heat the living room during the day and the bedroom before going to bed, when the cold starts to hit England. Health officials issued advice for people who are unable to heat every room or who are struggling with heating costs.
An overnight low of -10 degrees Celsius has been forecast in northern Scotland with snow and ice alerts. These very low temperatures will also affect Wales, Northern Ireland and the east coast. A level three cold weather warning for the UK starts at 18:00 GMT. Issued by the UK’s Health Safety Agency (UKHSA), it will run until 09:00 on December 12, but could be extended for longer if forecasts predict colder temperatures to continue to hit the country.
Alerts are activated when severe cold weather is likely to significantly affect public healthespecially those with underlying health conditions.
