British Foreign Minister, David Cameronwhich took place this Tuesday as the first visit by the head of British diplomacy to Paraguay in 160 years of bilateral relations, and has met with the president of Paraguay, Santiago Peñaas well as members of his cabinet, at the Government Palace, in the capital of the Latin American country, Asunción.
“This is the first time a British Foreign Secretary has visited Paraguay, after 160 years of relations. It feels good to be here. There are many coincidences between England and Paraguay”he said in a statement compiled by the Agency Paraguay Information (IP) after meeting with Peña, referring to positions regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine or the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Meanwhile, Paraguay’s president stressed that he had received Cameron “to talk about strengthening bilateral relations, the future of relations between Mercosur and the UK and major challenges in foreign policy.” “We are strengthening ties with the world. “Paraguay is determined to be a protagonist on the international stage”he confirmed.
“The UK and Paraguay are working together to promote ecological growth and the prosperity of our people. “We maintain our firm commitment to supporting Ukraine and defending democracy and human rights around the world,” the British Foreign Secretary said via his profile on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter.
Meanwhile, his counterpart from Paraguay, Rubén Ramírez highlighted the presence of British investment in green hydrogen projects, as well as Paraguay’s contribution to the generation and export of clean and renewable energy.. Both authorities have expressed their interest in increasing bilateral trade.
Cameron, who visited the Falkland Islands this Monday, expressed his hope that the territory would want to remain under British rule.for a long time, maybe forever”.
Likewise according to the news agency APCameron referred to the inhabitants of the archipelago: “As long as they want to be part of the United Kingdom, they are welcome and we will fully support them and help protect and defend them, as far as I’m concerned, for as long as they want to.. And I hope it will last a long time, maybe forever.”
The visit of British officials to the Malvinas is the first visit by a British chancellor since 2016. It came a month after he met with Argentine President Javier Milei in Switzerland, during the Global Economic Forum in Davos.
Unlike other presidents, Milei took into account the population of Argentina’s South Atlantic islands. In this context, the Argentine Head of State proposed a solution similar to the agreement that the UK negotiated with China regarding Hong Kong.
