A 72-year-old woman was killed and two others injured after a large sign for a Denny’s restaurant fell and crushed a car Thursday in Kentucky, NBC-affiliated WAVE reported.
The incident occurred in the restaurant chain’s parking lot in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
Three people, two women and one man, were in the car at the time of the accident, according to the news outlet.
One passenger was seriously injured and taken to the University Hospital of Louisville, where he later died, police said. The woman was identified Friday as Lillian Curtis.
Two other victims were taken to Baptist Health Hardin hospital with unspecified injuries, reported WAVE.
Strong winds contributed to the sign’s fall, police said. Witnesses said the wind blew the sign off its pole, causing it to fall into a parked car.
A spokesperson for Denny’s issued a statement Friday:
“Denny’s is aware of an incident that occurred at our Elizabethtown location on Thursday. Safety is our top priority and we are working with the authorities to better understand what caused this situation. Our thoughts are with everyone involved.”
An investigation into the cause of the sign’s fall is ongoing.
