AZOPARDICAL LACK OF VISION

New person concluded this week that “Azopardi is currently doing everything he can to undermine the Government, but without telling us what his vision for the future of Gibraltar is. It’s possible that all you have is ambition and no vision. This is a statement that does not reflect the reality on the ground for either of Gibraltar’s two main political parties. Politics is a matter of vision for your constituents. For there to be a vision, it must come within the scope of possibility, taking full account of the circumstances. Currently, faced with not allowing much margin.

VISION OF THE GSLP-LIBERAL GOVERNMENT

Implied in that statement New person about Keith AzopardiLeader of the Opposition and Gibraltar Social Democrats [GSD], does the governing GSLP-Liberals have a vision for the future of Gibraltar. The clear picture that GSLP-Liberal has gotten about their current view, is their belief that Gibraltar needs a Gibexit ‘deal’ between the UK and the EU, which they are eagerly trying but to no avail. Nothing else is known about the vision because everything is kept secret. What we do know is that optimism about the ability to strike a “deal” remains high across all parties involved. In addition to Mr. Picardo has acknowledged that certain aspects of anything “agreement», if resolved, would not match certain parts of Gibraltar.

Indeed, the GSLP-Liberals make little or no statement about the dire state of public finances and borrowing, other than attributing both to Brexit and the pandemic rather than their own past wasteful and financial mismanagement, which the facts exacerbate.

GSD VISION

This blogger is not defending Mr. Azopardi, but the accusations leveled against him New person does not reflect reality.

On the subject of Gibexit, Mr. Azopardi has his hands tied with GSLP-Liberal. You are notified in terms that do not allow you to make a public comment. Beyond what was told to him, which he couldn’t refer to, everything was kept secret from him, as it is from the rest of us. He simply expressed his hope that what came out of the ongoing talks might be for the best. The vision is for us to reach the best possible ‘deal’ for Gibraltar, but leave the final judgment on what is announced. It can only be the same view as held by GSLP-Liberal. They are the best hope Gibraltar can have as a community.

Regarding finances, the GSD clearly and correctly criticized the mismanagement of finances by the GSLP-Liberals. Under such circumstances, there is only one vision for the future, namely that public finances be managed in the best possible way to help Gibraltar emerge from the hole that GSLP-Liberal has dug.

WHERE GSD WRONG

The GSD was wrong in not promoting itself as the alternative government that Gibraltar needs right now. That’s what prevented him from advancing in the eyes of the electorate. It is this failure that Mr. Azopardi is responsible for. This is what GSD allows to happen through inaction. This is a failure that undermines the functioning of democracy in Gibraltar. GSD should not be a hindrance to democracy. It should be a clear path to democracy, as indicated by the inclusion of the word ‘Democrat’ in its name. However, no. It does not facilitate people’s participation in the party. If you think so, you are delusional, because that is not the reputation you get when those interested in politics chat in cafes and bars, or on the Internet. The blame lies with the party leadership, which in the GSD case is Mr Azopardi. However, GSD as a party did nothing to fix it.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO THINK WITH A VISION OF THE FUTURE

This blogger was recently described by New person as “disobedient”. It’s a compliment for accurately portraying the ability to have a single opinion and argue it vigorously so as not to become a mere follower. Political parties need such members to stimulate debate and reach conclusions that can be widely supported by party members. Without that freedom of expression, the stagnation that exists in Gibraltar’s politics today occurs. Where attempts to initiate new political forces with published visions were met with general disinterest. Just because New person You are right, does GSD need “vision”? The reality is that it is, and it exists with followers, so what difference does it make for you to have a “vision”. Unfortunately, this is what stands in the way of the positive evolution of politics in Gibraltar. The door is closed for new initiatives. Doors are closed for those with innovative ideas to join GSD. Befit and be damned are the spells that represent the GSD under Lord Azopardi.

RUDE POLITICS rancid

Popular stagnation is also reflected in an online survey conducted by Kaelan Joyce in the Twitter. Although not scientific, it shows feelings. In that poll, Fabian Picardo (GSLP) of GSLP-Liberales owns 43%, Keith Azopardi (GSD) 23%, Marlene Hassan 10% and independent/mixed 24%. These results say something. They appear to reflect disillusionment with the government and the GSD, but underscore the lack of alternatives.

Surprisingly, for years no media has conducted a poll. Isn’t it time to make one? Also, doesn’t the poll include an option for independent/mixed votes? It’s time to urge the established press to carry out such a survey.

EXPECTATION

There is currently a certain air of hope which is usually supplemented by disillusionment with those in parliamentary politics. Expectations focus on whether there will be a Gibexit “agreement” and what can be done and contributed. In addition, there are concerns about the state of public finances and public debt, which will only be corrected if each of us is asked, one way or another, to pay the government more. Either way, the next election will be interesting. If participation is low, there will be no change of government. If it is high, there will be changes. The reality is there is no motivation to get high.

The harsh reality is that only in the event of a crisis will interest in politics be stimulated and new powers will rise from the ashes.. That’s what led to its existence and initial success in the GSD polls.
