He clarified that his department is not working on dismissal reform
MADRID, 27 (EUROPEAN PRESS)
Second Vice President and Minister of Manpower, Yolanda Díaz, assured this Thursday that her Ministry is completing technical work to “claim criminal responsibility from Glovo”, a company she plans to take to the Prosecutor’s Office for its violation of the ‘Rider Law’.
“Glovo will comply with the laws of my country. There are no exceptions. When we make mistakes, they punish us. I thank other Spanish companies, many of them, working with digital platforms that respect labor rights. We are completing technical tasks, but in a democracy there are no exceptions. The law is the same for everyone”, the minister said at a news conference, after a meeting with union members and deputies from the British Labor Party.
Díaz has commented to the media that the British delegation was “impressed” by ‘Rider Law’ and “had asked hundreds of questions” about it.
The Minister of Labor has also spoken with representatives from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Labor Party about the “success of labor reform”, which has been done “in nine months what has not been achieved in 37 years of democracy”. “When we went to Europe to start defending labor reform, the commissioners asked us for this. Today it is possible”, added Díaz.
The Labor chief has indicated that union members and British deputies “want to learn” from the Spanish experience and have agreed to “work together”.
They have also discussed the political and economic situation in Britain, and have agreed on the “failure” of neoliberalism. “It’s inefficient, neither economically nor socially,” Díaz added.
IT IS “IMPORTANT” TO IMPROVE SMI
The Ministry of Manpower hopes to know soon the work of the expert commission on Minimum Interprofessional Salaries (SMI), which is responsible, among other things, calculating the equivalent of 60% of Spain’s median salary at current figures.
Once the results of the analysis are known, Díaz will call on social agencies to negotiate a revival of the SMI, which is currently set at 1,000 euros.
Díaz has once again reiterated this issue and has guaranteed that the Government will renew the SMI “because it matters.” In addition, he has spoken to social agents, and reminded them that it is “important” to raise wages in private companies.
“Salary increases are not negotiated and must be made. We have to do it because otherwise we will greatly impoverish our country”, warned the minister.
Unions will demonstrate next Thursday to demand a pay rise from employers, although for now they have ruled out a general strike.
Díaz has clarified that, if detained, he will not participate in the strike, although he has indicated that he is “the first Minister of Labor in Spanish democracy to have attended May 1”, and believes his successor will do so. after him.
MINISTRY DOES NOT WORK IN TERMINATION REFORM
The Minister of Manpower has clarified his statement on Wednesday regarding “reparative and restorative” layoffs, and has assured that his portfolio is “not working on this right now.”
Díaz explained that the modification of dismissal “is an issue that the UGT has raised” and that the Ministry “is considering”, but for now has two open negotiating tables focusing its work.
“I’m not working on this. I don’t plan to start with these tasks until we finish the table of dialogue or legislative activity. I’ll try it, but it’s a masterpiece of the Spanish workforce and I would love it. If I make laws like what other people do, (…) someone makes laws, explains them from the Ministry and does nothing else. It’s easy enough, I’ll have time there”, said Díaz referring to the future Workers Statute for the 21st century However, Díaz has advocated a dismissal focused on “the causes that motivated him.”
PUBLIC INCOME STRUCTURE REFORM
Díaz also alludes to the business benefits that some companies present during their earnings season, and has pointed out that “this is proof” that they are “benefiting from this crisis.”
“Fiscal injustice continues and Spain needs structural reforms of public revenues where the more they have, the more they pay,” he said.
The Labor Minister has pointed out, in particular, banking entities, which he says are benefiting from the European Central Bank (ECB) rate hike, which he considers a “mistake”.
“Precisely because of the increase in interest rates, the largest income transfer occurred from residents to financial institutions. This is unfair”, he has pointed out, and once again underlined that this situation affects the “middle class, not only vulnerable people”.
