About Challenger 3

The Challenger gets a digital upgrade, with a new digital camouflage paint scheme, seen here on track at the Bovington Training area in Dorset in the latter part of 2020

This is MBT (Main Battle Tank), the latest version of the British Challenger family of tanks. Initially, the program was aimed at maintaining operational capability, and the goal was changed in mid-2015. Since then, efforts have been directed to extending life by replacing obsolete components to keep the Challenger up to date throughout the decade, with a view to 2035 inclusive.

The Challenger 3 designation comes as a new designation introduced in the latest review of UK Defense Policy. The new appointment comes days after Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger’s statement, in which he confirmed that the German company was selected to carry out the Challenger modernization.
