European Council President Charles Michel of Belgium on Friday congratulated Labour leader Keir Starmer on his “historic” victory in Britain’s parliamentary elections and invited the British politician to collaborate with the EU on issues of “common interest” such as security, energy and migration.
“Congratulations to Keir Starmer on his historic victory in the UK election. The European Union and the UK are important partners who work together in all areas of common interest to our citizens,” Michel wrote on the social network X.
The European Council President added that he looked forward to working with the Government formed by Starmer “in a new cycle for the UK.”
“See you at the European Political Community meeting on 18 July in the UK, where we will discuss common challenges, including stability, security, energy and migration,” concluded Michel, who is serving his final term as president of the European Council.
On the same social network, the president of the European Commission also sent “congratulations” to Starmer on his “election victory”.
“I look forward to working with you in a constructive partnership to address common challenges and strengthen European security,” said Von der Leyen, who was recently nominated by a majority of European leaders for a second term as chair of the Community Executive, which must now be validated by a plenary session of the European Parliament.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, who will also reiterate the position, also noted at X that “the relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom is rooted in shared values and our long-standing friendship.” and “As allies and partners, it is in our common interest to continue working closely together,” she said.
Starmer’s Labour Party won a landslide victory in the election, winning with an absolute majority, and will take over the British government after meeting with King Charles III.
“A huge Labour majority, after 14 years of conservative rule culminating in Brexit. Keir Starmer’s reformist leadership returns the British left to government after a long phase of minority radicalism,” said Labour’s commissioner for economy and former Italian prime minister, social democrat Paulo Gentiloni.
