Britain sanctioned three companies for their involvement in crimes against the Rohingya community
MADRID, August 25 (EUROPEAN PRESS) –
Former British ambassador to Burma Vicky Bowman was arrested on Wednesday in the city of Yangon, on the banks of the Yangon River, on migration-related charges, British network BBC learned on Thursday.
Bowman, who heads the city-based Center for Responsible Business Burma (MCRB), and who served as Britain’s ambassador to the Southeast Asian nation for four years, has been detained along with her husband, Htein Lin, a Burmese artist and former political prisoner.
The arrests came shortly after British authorities announced new sanctions against actors operating on behalf of the Burmese Armed Forces on the fifth anniversary of the military’s campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya community.
“Those subject to sanctions include the Star Sapphire group of companies, the International Gateways Group of Companies Limited (IGG) and the Sky One Construction company. They are sanctioned in an effort to limit military access to weapons,” the UK government said. .
The Secretary of State for Asia and the Middle East, Amanda Milling, has pointed out that London, five years later, continues to show solidarity with the cause, saying she condemns “the appalling campaign of ethnic cleansing by the Armed Forces”.
