The fossils date back 166 million years, that is, from the Jurassic . period

A small fossil found at Skye has provided new insight into the lizard’s early evolution. during the time of the dinosaurs, according to scientists. The skeleton of Bellairsia gracilis is only 6 cm (2 inches) long and dates from the Middle Jurassic period, 166 million years ago. This is the most complete lizard fossil from this era anywhere in the world.

The researchers state that it provides evidence of what the ancestors of lizards looked like today. The fossil was discovered in 2016 by a team led by the University of Oxford and the National Museum of Scotland. This is one of several new fossil discoveries from Skye, nicknamed the Scottish Jurassic Island because of the many fossil discoveries on the island. Other recent discoveries include the first amphibians and mammals.

The study of these types of paleontological remains helps the scientific community, and therefore human society, to better understand the world we live in. This is very important to help discover how the evolution of life on Earth has developed.
