BERLIN, September 11 (DPA/EP) –
The German government admitted that Moroccan authorities had not responded to offers of help made following the earthquake that rocked the High Atlas region on Friday night, after Rabat only received aid from four countries, among them Spain.
On Saturday, Berlin was offering specialist rescue and dog deliveries. This Monday, the spokesman for the German Ministry of the Interior, Maximilian Kalll, prepared a water treatment plant, if Rabat was willing to accept it.
“So far, they have not received any offers of help,” said a German Foreign Ministry spokesman, who avoided discussing the political background to the case. “This can be ruled out in our case,” he added, stressing that bilateral relations were now good, after disputes over Western Sahara caused tensions in 2021.
The Moroccan government only allows aid from Spain, the UK, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates and alleges that opening the door to more countries could cause communication problems and, therefore, be counterproductive.
