The Secretary of Health, Carolina Darias, has assured that the evolution of those affected monkeypox is mild and does not require any treatment. Cases designated as non-human smallpox in Spain now stand at 23.
As Darias explains, all cases have been detected by PCR, so they still need to be sequenced to determine what type of smallpox is and rule out, or not, monkeypox. The Minister made this statement within the framework of the conference ‘Obesity: political, health and social priorities’, organized by the Obesity Policy Engagement Network (OPEN).
Carlos III Institute of Health (ISCIII) used a molecular detection method using real-time PCR (broad spectrum multiplex technology), plus genetic sequencing of amplified fragments to confirm 100 percent. PCR allows differential diagnosis of the orthopoxvirus family (there are 4 types), and then sorting allows to determine if it is monkeypox or not.
“The evolution of these people is mild and, therefore, they do not require special care. With respect to antivirals and vaccines, we assessed their viability and effectivenessand its availability”, argued the minister, according to European press.
The emergence of monkeypox and its symptoms
Monkeypox is a zoonotic viral disease typical of central and west Africa, although it occasionally ends up spreading its transmission to other countries of the world. The alarm sounds when On 7 May, the first case was detected on British territory.from a traveler from Nigeria.
Currently, positives have been reported in United States, Israel, Singapore, Canada or United Kingdomalthough not in all cases there is a direct relationship between them.
Transmission occurs when “a person comes into contact with the virus from another person, a carrier animal, or contaminated material.” This situation can givee through broken skin, respiratory tract or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth and genitals).
The main symptoms of monkeypox appear in the second stage of infection, known as “invasion”, and in which the patient suffers from fever, headache, fatigue, or lymphadenopathy. In the third “exanthematic” period, lesions such as erythema, vesicular papules and finally pustules develop.
Monkeypox treatment
This vaccine is another recommendation from experts, although the original model against smallpox is no longer available in the world. However, new alternatives based on the vaccinia virus have been developed with limited availability, although notor is there a special vaccine for this type of smallpox?.
The closest thing is to find a way to avoid the “high-risk situations” associated with the above-mentioned viruses. One of which is jynneos vaccinethe only one currently indicated for preventing monkeypox.
