A recent BBC study examined the differences in prize money for women and men across various sports. Golf is one of the most unequal sports.
The survey covers a total of 56 global sports. Of the 35 sports that provide prize money, 25 of them have the same amount of prize money for women and men. Golf is one of ten sports with an unequal distribution, with men receiving a higher number of prizes than women.
British Sports Minister Helen Grant was encouraged by the number of sports that provide equal prize money for both sexes.
– There is equality in 70 percent of sports. That’s great and what we want. “We want other sports to move in the same direction, and I think that will happen when the full potential of women’s sport is seen and realised,” she told the BBC.
Commercial giants such as football, golf and cricket are among the most unequal sports, along with darts, snooker and squash.
Commercial interest in men’s golf is much greater than in women’s golf, which is also reflected in the prize money.
During this summer’s British Open, the winner of the women’s tournament received 298,000 pounds, NOK 3.17 million. The winner on the men’s side was able to collect 10.38 million.
At the PGA Championship, the difference was greatest: Winner Kim Hyo-Joo won 212,000 pounds, 2.26 million kroner, while Rory McIlroy got 1.1 million pounds, or a richer 11.71 million kroner.
