Hangar 13, the developer of Mafia 3 and a subsidiary of Take-Two, made staff cuts this week. Take-Two publishers will make this decision following the cancellation of a major unannounced project that the studio is currently working on.
The layoffs will be announced by Nick Baynes, president of Hangar 13, virtually. In a report he stated that the company will not make any further cuts in personnel and that all employees who are still employed at the company must remain with the company.
Currently the total number of dismissals has not been confirmed, which they came just months after Take-Two said it wouldn’t. In November 2021, the company canceled development of the Volt, stating that thus employees working on the game would be transferred to other projects and would not lose their jobs.
From now on, Hangar 13 will focus exclusively on Mafia and other projects that have yet to be announced.
This is not the first time the publisher has decided to cut the production team of Hangar 13. In 2018, not long after the release of Mafia 3, the company made a similar decision. Lay off employees to “ensure that studio resources align with its development plans.”
The company currently has studios in Novato, California, Brighton (UK) and the Czech Republic, working on two projects. One of these projects is the new chapter of Mafia, which promises to take place before the previous title. It is being developed under the code name Nero.
Hangar 13 recently underwent changes that resulted in the departure of its president and founder Haden Blackman, as well as COO Matthew Urban. So far, the developers have not provided any official comment on the layoffs.
