India has summoned the British ambassador, Alex Ellis, over the “total lack of security” which allowed “separatist and extremist elements” of the Khalistan Sikh movement to enter India’s diplomatic facilities in London, even going so far as to change the flag for a state moment by one of the group.

As can be seen in the video, one of the people demonstrating in front of the Indian Embassy in London climbed onto the terrace and once there lowered the national flag to hang for a few seconds in support of Khalistan, a region with a historic past. The Sikh Empire was located in the north west of the present day state.

“India finds the UK government’s indifference to the security of Indian diplomatic facilities and staff unacceptable,” the Foreign Office protested in a statement, calling for London to act immediately to “identify, arrest and prosecute” those involved.

Meanwhile, Ellis has used his social networks to show his denial of what happened, describing the episode as “absolutely unacceptable” and “disgraceful”. Similarly, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has done the same and stated that the British capital is not the place “for this kind of behavior”.

The episode at the Embassy took place over an intense weekend in the Punjab region, where authorities intensified operations to arrest separatist leader Amritpal Singh, who in recent months was responsible for reviving the now outlawed Khalistan movement.

Although the separatist movement was largely suppressed in the mid-1990s, it continues to find support in India and among the Sikh diaspora, especially in the UK, Canada and Australia, the last countries to celebrate this weekend. Brisbane this week.
