Meta (the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger) announced that Instagram and Facebook users in Europe will be able to view content from network in chronological orderthus bypassing the platform specific algorithm.
The tech giant made this change to comply with the regulations Digital Services Law (DSA) The European Union, a regulation that took effect this week and will affect how technology companies moderate content on their platforms.
As explained in the statement by the president of global affairs on Meta, Nick CleggEuropean users will be able to access features such as Reels (short videos), stories and search engines on Facebook and Instagram without viewing content that is ranked by the Meta recommendation algorithm.
“For example, on Facebook and Instagram, users will have the option to view Stories and Reels only from the people they follow, sorted chronologically, from newest to oldest. You can also see the results look for based solely on the words they put in, rather than tailoring it specifically based on their past activity and personal interests,” notes Clegg.
According to Clegg, these changes are part of a series of projects that Meta is undertaking to comply with the DSA. The company has 1,000 workers whose job it is to ensure they comply with the new regulations.
The President of Global Affairs also pointed out that the company offers greater transparency about advertising platforms and their recommendation algorithms, as well as setting new boundaries for how advertisers target teens.
However, Purpose didn’t mention in the statement about Threadsa social network that launched this summer but has yet to reach European Union countries because regulations are stricter than those in the United States or the United Kingdom, countries where the app is available.
Meanwhile, tick tock -one of the social network’s main competitors- announced similar changes to its service in Europe earlier this month.
