Tehran. Iranians held demonstrations in cities across the country on Friday to condemn the interference of some Western governments in the country’s internal affairs, in particular the French, German and British governments, the official IRNA news agency reported.
The protesters, who marched after Friday prayers, also denounced French magazine Charlie Hebdo’s insults to Iran’s religious and political authorities.
In a statement issued after the protests, Iran condemned French, British and German interference in Iran’s internal affairs and their support for the country’s “rioters” in recent weeks.
They also urged the Iranian government and Foreign Ministry to take all legal steps to respond to the French magazine’s insult of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Charlie Hebdo published caricatures of Iran’s supreme leader deemed “insulting” by Iranian authorities, prompting condemnation and a strong reaction from Tehran.
The protests started in Iran after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in a Tehran hospital on September 16, 2022, days after she collapsed at a police station.
Iran accuses the United States and other Western countries of “inciting unrest and supporting terrorists” in the country.
