Liverpool played the national anthem to mark the coronation of King Charles
Liverpool have decided to gather players and referees around the center circle to mark the coronation of King Charles on Saturday. The national anthem is played.
The Premier League club confirmed this on its website on Friday.
Liverpool stated that management in England’s top flight had asked all clubs to have a home match on Saturday to mark the royal coronation. The club has received a list of suggestions on what could be done.
Liverpool face Brentford at home to Anfield on Saturday. Before the match started, the players and the referee gathered on the field, while playing “God Save The King”.
Many Liverpool supporters have shown a clear refusal to mark Coronation Day. During the midweek 1-0 win over Fulham, a derogatory song about the king of England was sung from The Kop stand at Anfield. In the past, Liverpool fans booed when the national anthem was played.
Saturday’s match will be played from 18.30 Norwegian time and will be broadcast on UK television.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool management felt they were in an impossible position when the Premier League “strongly recommended” clubs to play “God Save The King” ahead of this weekend’s game. They prefer to see that it is an order.
It is the first time in 70 years that a British monarch will be crowned. King Charles became king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth, died.
