Tierra de marsubsidiary of Maersk and specializes in intra-European logistics, launching a new rail product from Spain to the UK specifically designed for temperature sensitive cargoes such as fruit and vegetables.
The new transport option is adapted to Spanish fresh produce, has flexible capacity and will initially have three weekly departures from the Valencia terminal to the Barking terminal in East London. The trains will also carry non-refrigerated cargo on their way south from England back to Spain.
After a trial run in September with positive customer feedback, regular deliveries will begin at the end of October, just in time for the peak season for exporting fruits and vegetables in Spain. More than 90% of these exports go north, bringing up to 1,400 trucks across Spain’s northern border each day to the key markets of England, France, Benelux, Germany and Scandinavia.
“Our new product solves some of the challenges that our cold storage customers in Spain face when exporting: first, many large retailers want to reduce the carbon footprint of the products they sell. Second, there is a shortage of truck drivers, which means that current cross-border trucking is often limited and unreliable. Third, the limited capacity and quality of main roads, causing congestion. Our rail transport keeps Spanish exporters away from driver shortages and road congestion, and offers more than 90% less CO2 emissions than trucks on the road,” he said. Diego Forgiveness MonteroDirector General of the Territories of France, Iberia and the Maghreb.
Perdones added that “large clients (importers, manufacturers, and retailers) operate with sea and land cargo flows. By offering our reliable overland distribution network via rail, we will help create faster, greener and more efficient routes, regardless of the origin and destination of sensitive cargoes.”
In addition, Maersk simplifies and optimizes the supply chain of its customers by offering comprehensive additional logistics services. From customs brokers or cold storage to Captain Peter, a technology that ensures full transparency of data about the status of cargo in reefer containers throughout its journey.
