Meet the candidates for the 2023 FundsPeople Awards in the best manager category of a large Spanish management company

Diploma in Business Science and Actuarial Science and Finance degree from University of Malaga, Master in International Financial Markets from UNED and European Financial Adviser and EFPA ESG. He has 22 years of experience in financial markets, highlighting his work at the Unicaja Banco Group. In fact, since last September he has served as General Director of Unigest SGIIC. Previously, he developed his activities at Unicorp Patrimonio SV.

Which part of your job do you enjoy the most: managing teams, strategic and commercial parts, or product suite design and innovation?

All problems have their positive aspects. Right now, in the middle of the merger process of our managers (Unigest’s absorption of Liberbank Gestión), these three legs are very important. Regardless of my position of responsibility, I am always keen to contribute my ideas to management on strategy, process improvement and product suite. And, to be precise, now I want my team to do the same, because it’s the best way for them to feel part of the company’s evolution and improvement. In 2023, innovation will be key, with the aim of increasing productivity, as well as product line design, and that is where we will focus our efforts to the fullest.

And least of all?

I have been in my current position for a short time, but, without a doubt, in my new position and, after the merger of Unigest and Liberbank Gestión, every day I find new challenges, which are at the same time exciting. .

What achievement are you most proud of?

In my previous stage as Investment Director of Unicorp Patrimonio, there were two accomplishments that I am most proud of. First of all, leading a group from Malaga capable of competing with the best asset management teams in the country, managing to win the Expansión Award for the best Conservative Portfolio on two consecutive occasions, despite years as complicated as 2019. and 2020. Second, having managed to deliver major push on Unicaja Banco’s Discretionary Portfolio Management for Personal Banking, offering a highly diversified portfolio to over 17,000 clients in less than a year.

The main challenges that lie ahead for 2023

After carrying out the integration of Unigest and Liberbank Gestión in the last quarter of 2022, we started the year with challenges such as the design of the final suite of enterprise products and investments in technology and digitization to try to strengthen our training and information. business network. However, the main goal is sustainability. We have closed 2022 with 42% of our assets as an article 8 on the sustainability scale, and we are looking to get this figure to exceed 75% in the first months of the year, with the transformation of the range profile of Liberbank and the fund from Unigest global fixed income.

Apart from investing in companies that already have social responsibility, we believe that the main function of fund managers is to channel savings to companies that have a strong intention to invest in the coming years to make them more sustainable. That is the true path of ecological transition.

What competing entities do you benchmark against?

I think you always have to look at what the competition is doing. Specifically, what did you do right, and perhaps more importantly, what did you do wrong to avoid making the same mistake.
