Foreign Minister Diana Mondino renewed Malvinas’ claims at United Nations (UN) headquarters and called for a “mature” relationship with Britain.

Mondino spoke before the UN Special Committee on Decolonization, which in a new resolution reiterated its call for the UK and Argentina to resume bilateral negotiations to find, as soon as possible, a “peaceful and definitive solution” to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands and surrounding maritime space”.

During the session, many delegates expressed their support for the call and Argentina’s sovereign rights in the Malvinas Islands Issue, including interventions on behalf of the States Parties and Associated States of MERCOSUR and the Brasilia Consensus, by Paraguay and Brazil, respectively.

In his speech, Mondino reaffirmed Argentina’s sovereign rights over the Malvinas Islands, the South Georgia Islands, the South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime space and urged the United Kingdom to take the same commitment that our country maintains in the peaceful resolution of disputes, multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of disputes . a rules-based international order, through fulfilling the decolonization obligations reflected in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the Special Committee on Decolonization.

The owner of the Palace of San Martín recalled that this year marks sixty years since the famous speech of Ambassador José María Ruda before the same Committee, in which he presented the title of Argentine history and law in the Problem of the Malvinas Islands, explaining the situation specifically and in contrast to other colonial cases , which put at risk the principle of territorial integrity, which was violated with the British occupation of that part of Argentina.

Mondino recalled that sixty years ago the same Committee also unanimously approved the recommendations which were later included by the General Assembly in its resolution 2065, dated December 16, 1965.

With that, he stated that “The General Assembly and this Special Committee set the course for decolonization of the Malvinas Islands: these are bilateral negotiations to reach a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute, taking into account the provisions and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations, resolution 1514, as well as the interests of the inhabitants of the Islands.”

This belief, said the diplomat, “Owned by all the Argentine people, and reflected in our National Constitution: the restoration of the full exercise of our sovereignty over the archipelago and the surrounding maritime space, in accordance with international law and respecting the way of life of its inhabitants. This is a permanent and irrevocable goal.

In this regard, he continued: “This is an issue that transcends political party differences, and is state policy. For example, today I was honored by representatives of the governments of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands to join us. Delegation.”

As Mondino specified, “The inhabitants of these islands are guaranteed the full enjoyment of the human rights guaranteed by our National Constitution, as well as universal, public and free access to the health and education systems at all levels, just like every inhabitant of Argentine soil. way of life is enshrined in our National Constitution.”

He also reported that, since his inauguration last December, President Javier Milei has expressed his willingness to inaugurate a new phase in relations with the UK, noting that the two countries have traditionally maintained rich and mutually beneficial relations, covering a wide range of fields. cooperation.

“In a dynamic global scenario, Argentina intends to develop its capabilities in the medium and long term, and generate a mature relationship with the UK, which envisages constructive dialogue on all issues of mutual interest”held.

And continued: “The Argentine government believes that through this dialogue a higher level of cooperation can be achieved, and hopes that this will generate the climate of trust necessary to continue negotiations to resolve the sovereignty dispute.”.
