Nokia Circular, a program to recirculate waste from mobile phone manufacturing

Nokia implemented an ecological strategy that had become a rumor a few months ago for the iPhone. Now, the company wants buyers to “rent” their phones for a useful period of time and then return them as part of the recycling process.

This proposal is known as Nokia Circular, a possible alternative to avoid the increased waste generated by the manufacture of mobile phones. HMD Global, the brand behind Nokia phones, made this announcement on the sidelines of IFA 2022. The subscription service will be available, for now, in the UK and Germany.

The goal is to get him to more areas of the world as soon as possible. The idea is to be able to “rent” a smartphone for a monthly fee and the goal is to keep the phone longer than usual. At the end of this time, you can immediately replace it with a more up-to-date one with the HMD Global company. This will allow you to recycle or donate your existing phone.

As long as the subscription is active, the user will remain in a program called Tomorrow’s Seeds, funds to acquire “seeds” and donate them to social causes. Of course, the longer you keep your current phone, the more seeds you’ll earn that can be used for three charities dedicated to protecting the environment.

All of these charities are planting trees with Ecology, or advancing the cleanup of plastic from rivers with ClearRivers, and even helping bring technology to the underprivileged with Unconnected. For now, no further details of each of these processes are known, such as the number of “seeds” donated, or even the time required to collect them. The idea is that the user is increasingly in charge of the life of the phone.

Four devices are available in the UK for £30 (154,000 Colombian pesos) to install. One of them is the Nokia G60 5G which costs 12.50 pounds (64 thousand Colombian pesos) per month, the X30 5G costs 25 pounds (128,000 pesos) per month, the XR20 which costs 20 pounds (102 thousand pesos) per month and the tablet. The new Nokia T10 costs £10 (51K pesos) per month.
