– The sabotage of Nordstream cables has shown us how vulnerable we are. We have to take it seriously. We are therefore now working even closer with the UK to strengthen security, said Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp).
Gram signed a letter of intent with UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace during a visit to the UK’s operational headquarters at Northwood outside London. The declaration will strengthen and further develop the existing cooperation.
– Norway and the United Kingdom both have insurance interests in the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. We share the same ocean area and we share an interest in working together on safety in our immediate area. We have worked well together in the North Sea after the sabotage of the Nordstream cable and it is this cooperation that we now want to develop further, said Gram.
Norway has canceled its emergency preparedness in the North Sea. The Norwegian Armed Forces have increased their activity on the continental shelf with aircraft and ships, and there is substantial allied support, including from Great Britain. The activities are closely coordinated between the operational headquarters of the Norwegian Armed Forces (FOH) and the maritime headquarters of NATO (MARCOM) in the United Kingdom.
