Pakistani security forces have arrested former Prime Minister Imran Jan on Tuesday on suspicion of corruption, as confirmed by members of his party, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), who even criticized the politician. had been “kidnapped” while performing in Islamabad.
Jan had been detained by Pakistan Rangers officers outside the Islamabad High Court, according to Faisal Chaudhri, vice president of PTI. As such, he has stated in messages on his Twitter account that the court “has been occupied by the Rangers” and that the lawyers are “tortured”.
Accordingly, Azhar Mashuani, also a member of Jan’s party, said that the prime minister had been “kidnapped” and called on his supporters to demonstrate across the country to protest the arrest of the former prime minister.
For its part, Islamabad Police has beefed up security in the nation’s capital and denied that anyone had been tortured. Additionally, he pointed out that agents had surrounded the vehicle Jan was traveling in prior to his arrest.
Jan has been arrested in the framework of a corruption case stemming from the handing over of land to Al Qadir University in exchange for the return of sums seized in Britain from Pakistani businessman Malik Riaz.
The arrests came days after Pakistani press reported that the former prime minister would be charged this Wednesday on charges of illegal enrichment by allegedly hiding some of the gifts he received while leading the Government from 2018 until his ouster in 2022 within the framework. the Toshajana case, which led to his disqualification from public office in October.
