MADRID, May 3. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –
The president of Paraguay, Mario Abdo, has canceled his trip to London to attend the coronation of Carlos III as King of England in the context of allegations of electoral fraud and violent demonstrations promoted by the opposition.
Abdo was supposed to travel the day before to London accompanied by the first lady, Silvana López, and a security delegation. However, the Presidency of Paraguay has decided to suspend the visit, according to local newspaper ‘ABC Color’.
Charles III, who ascended to the throne in early September following the death of his mother, Elizabeth II, will be crowned king of England on Saturday at Westminster Abbey before a multitude of international leaders.
The Paraguayan authorities’ decision comes after a presidential election that was held on Sunday and in which Colorado Party candidate Santiago Peña won with 43 percent of the vote.
Peña, the former Minister of Finance and head of the country’s visible continuity, has forced himself on Efraín Alegre, the former Minister of Public Works and leader of Concentration, a coalition of progressive forces in which they plead for change by promising reforms.
Both Alegro and other opposition leaders have denounced in recent hours that Sunday’s election was rigged and called for demonstrations that have, in some cases, turned violent, according to the Paraguayan press.
However, the EU election monitoring mission sent to Paraguay has issued its preliminary report on the election and has ruled out the possibility of election fraud by not recording “serious incidents, interruptions in the processing of sensitive election information, or serious deficiencies in the chain of custody of election material.”
