Patent applications in the world have reached a new record

Patent applications, with over 54% of the total, are led by innovators from China, Japan, and South Korea.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has revealed that patent applications have increased globally, reaching a record 280,000 in 2022.

WIPO Director General Daren Tang highlighted that despite difficult economic conditions, the company continues to invest in innovation.

Patent applications are led by Asia, especially China, Japan and South Korea, which account for more than 54% of all applications.

China has filed the most patent applications in 2022, with a total of 70,015, followed by the United States, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies has become the top patent plaintiff, with 7,689 applications.

Information and computing technology, digital communications, and electrical machines are the most requested fields in terms of patents.

Regarding brandMadrid’s system of registrations decreased by 6.1%, with the United States first, followed by Germany, China, France and the United Kingdom.

The number of application units for industrial design registration has increased annually by 11%.

China’s accession to WIPO’s international design registration system has fueled this increase, especially in the communications and technology sector.

Germany is the biggest user of the international design registration system, followed by China.
