Former Arsenal and Chelsea hero Petr Cech retired as a footballer this summer. Now the Czech player is back as a goalkeeper again, this time in ice hockey.
Petr Cech is one of the Premier League’s all-time great heroes when it comes to goalkeeping. The Czech, who played for London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea, holds the league record for most clean sheets (202).
After playing for Chelsea for eleven seasons, Cech announced his transfer to Arsenal in 2015, playing at the red London club for the remainder of his football career, until he retired after last season.
Cech’s last match before hanging up his boots was against Chelsea, when Arsenal lost 1-4 to their city rivals in the Europa League final last May.
Now Cech is back as a goalkeeper, but in a different sport. Guildford Pheonix ice hockey club announced on Wednesday evening that Petr Cech has signed a contract with the club until this season. Guildford Pheonix currently play in Division 2 – South, which is the fourth highest level in England for ice hockey.
The protagonist himself is happy about this opportunity.
– I am happy to have the opportunity to play with Pheonix to gain combat experience. I hope I can help this young team achieve their goals this season and try to win as many games as possible when I get the chance to play. “After 20 years in professional football, this will be a great experience for me to play the sport I loved watching when I was younger,” the 37-year-old said in a club press release.
And the former soccer goalkeeper didn’t have to wait long to make his debut as an ice hockey goalie. According to the club’s head coach, Milos Melicherik, Cech will make his debut on Sunday, when the team welcomes Swindon Wildcats at 2.
– We are thrilled to have Petr join us at Pheonix and we look forward to seeing him in action this weekend. “He has improved a lot since I first saw him on the ice, and I am really looking forward to seeing him play,” Meicherik said.
After Cech quit this summer, he was also hired by his old club Chelsea, where he was given the role of technical and performance advisor, according to Guard.
The goalkeeper will wear jersey number 39 at Pheonix.
Cech, among others, won four Premier League titles, one Champions League title and five FA Cup titles together at Chelsea and Arsenal.
