Breaking news: Pills favor Bank of England intervention: “there is a risk of financial instability”

I have the pleasure of speaking at the Institute of Directors’ annual dinner tonight in Northern Ireland. I thank Gordon Milligan and his colleagues at IoD for their kind invitation.

I would also like to thank my colleagues Frances Hill and Gillian Anderson at the Belfast Branch of the Bank of England for putting together a wonderful agenda for my visit to Northern Ireland. Many of you will know them as Agency contacts, providing insight into their own business development and company status in the Bank’s decision-making process.

Let me take this opportunity to thank you for all the time and effort you put into imparting that knowledge. My colleagues at MPC, as well as in other parts of the Bank, find this information invaluable in obtaining timely economic readings. At a time when we are faced with uncertainty in many dimensions, such timely readings can greatly influence our thinking, our analysis, and ultimately our policy decisions.

The Belfast Agency Bank was established in the late 1990s to ensure that developments in Northern Ireland are fully incorporated into the Bank’s economic assessment. As a Welshman now working on Threadneedle Street, I appreciate that the Bank of England can seem like a remote institution, ostensibly centered in the City of London and detached from the everyday worries of people living in other parts of England. The Institution’s work serves as a bridge between the Bank and the households, businesses and communities it serves.
