Quinn becomes history – Dagsavisen

The 25-year-old will no longer use his first name and will not be referred to by gender-specific pronouns, but rather by “they” (chicken in Norwegian). Quinn has been a national team player since 2014 and won Olympic bronze in 2016, but only came out as trans last year.

Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard of New Zealand, who lived the first 35 years of her life as a man, received a lot of attention for her participation in the women’s weightlifting class early in the Olympics. This sparked debate, and some stated that Hubbard had an unfair physical advantage over his competitors.

The debate died down when the 43-year-old Hubbard failed to make his opening weight in the +87 kilogram class and was left with no results. The New Zealander admitted he was overwhelmed by the attention.

Digestible

Quinn has flown relatively under the radar. Generally the debate is reduced when someone who previously identified as female is revealed to be transgender.

– I might be considered one of the more easily digestible versions of what it means to be trans. “I’m white and trans-masculine, but I want my story to be known because it can make trans people more visible,” Quinn told Ol Reigns’ club team site.

Hen has been linked with the club since 2019, but last year was loaned to Swede Vittsjö.

Open the door

– I get messages from young people who say that they have never seen a transgender person playing sports before. “If I can help open the doors for young people to play the sport they love, that will be my legacy,” Quinn told CBC after the upset win over the United States in the Olympic semifinals.

– I am proud to be a part of the Olympics, but it saddens me to know that other Olympians before me were unable to live their truth due to the current state of the world, he reported on social media.

– Trans athletes are still closeted in sport and face prejudice when pursuing their dreams. The fight is not over yet. I’ll celebrate when we’re all here.
