MADRID, Sept. 18. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –
Great Britain will observe a minute of silence this Sunday in memory of Queen Elizabeth II on the final day of the burning chapel being installed at Westminster and on the eve of the state funeral for the king.
In London, near London Bridge, at 20:01 a.m., a group of Britons paused and lowered their heads, fulfilling the minute of silence they broke at the end of a standing ovation, according to the British press.
Dozens of Metropolitan Police officers who were very close, guarding the rows of the funeral chapel, also observed a moment of silence and then sang an English anthem.
And at Number 10 Downing Street, the seat of Government, the Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has been standing at the door of the residence for minutes of silence.
In Chester, on City Hall Square, a minute’s silence was celebrated, attended by a hundred people.
After a minute of silence, thunderous applause rang out and then a poem written by Simon Armitage was read to the queen, ‘A promise made and kept by life’. Then prayers were offered and the British national anthem was sung in the presence of the Bishop of Chester, Mark Tanner. The attendees were also invited to light candles as a sign of “hope and prayer” for the nation.
At Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland, hundreds of people participated in the action with their heads bowed and before a flower offering on the doorstep of the region’s official crown residence.
In Belfast, the Queen is remembered in a short church service at Orange Hall in West Belfast. A minute’s silence is also observed at Belfast International Airport or at the Titanic Belfast attraction.
