As a strategic partner of Grand Union Trains to operate a new commercial service between London and Carmarthen (Wales)

Renfe is considering entering UK rail service as one of the strategic partners of Grand Union Trains (GUT) to operate a new commercial service between London and Carmarthen (Wales), rail operators have reported.

Renfe will participate in operations by contributing his experience in commercial services, as well as his knowledge of liberalized operations, offering high-performance services.

If the project materializes, which is still under review by the UK regulator (ORR), it would be Renfe’s first project in the UK.

The GUT proposal foresees significant investment in service delivery, which could include participation by Serena Industrial Partners, an independent private equity firm from Spain committed to sustainable infrastructure development in the UK.

GUT is a British rail company that is developing a new passenger service to operate between South Wales and London. The company’s directors had previously promoted other open access services, including one called Grand Central, which they later sold to Arriva, a DB subsidiary.

Renfe’s Strategic Plan defines internationalization as one of the three main pillars for the company’s development. This new opportunity for Renfe adds to projects being developed, such as Harammain (Saudi Arabia), participation in Central Texas (United States) and in promoting the Maya Train project (Mexico), as well as Renfe’s entry into the shareholding of Leo Ekspres (Czech).
