Russia.- Britain and Germany intercepted three Russian warplanes near NATO airspace

MADRID, April 17. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –

Warplanes from Britain and Germany on Monday intercepted two Russian fighter and spy planes over the waters of the Gulf of Finland, in the Baltic Sea and near Atlantic Alliance airspace.

According to the Royal Air Force (RAF), the British Air Force, one of the Russian planes has been identified as a spy plane coming from mainland Russia and heading to the Kaliningrad exclave, bordering Poland and Lithuania.

British and German fighter jets escorted the Russian aircraft away from NATO air borders until the Swedish Air Force took over, according to Sky News.

However, the RAF has emphasized that this has been a “routine interception” as “Russian military aircraft have been frequently seen flying over the Baltic Sea.” “Our commitment to the collective defense of NATO airspace remains unwavering,” an RAF pilot said in a statement.

Russian authorities reported last week up to two operations to intercept German and Norwegian aircraft around Russian airspace and those they were escorting in the opposite direction.
