Britain announced on Saturday that it would step up humanitarian aid to Ukraine by sending more essential equipment to aid centers and hospitals.
The UK government said in a statement that it would provide an additional 287 generators that would help operate relief centres, hospitals, telephone towers and water pumping stations. The new generators are enough to power the equivalent of 8,000 homes and will be used for basic services in the face of the ongoing devastation in eastern Ukraine.
According to the statement, hospitals, shelters and other essential services will be given more power to operate in the face of the ongoing Russian offensive through a further 287 mobile generators donated by the British government.
In total, the UK will ship 856 generators.
“Putin’s atrocities continue to increase, which is why we are increasing our support for the Ukrainian people in their time of need. Our donation of another 287 generators will ensure that more important services continue to operate in Ukraine,” said Kwasi Kwarting, Minister of State. Business and Energy.
Britain’s decision follows a request from Ukraine’s ambassador, Vadim Prystaiko, who welcomed the earlier delivery of generators saying: “Light will always overcome darkness,” the government said.
The generators will be delivered to a Polish government facility. From there, the Ukrainian government and the country’s power grid will distribute the generators to all the countries that need them most.
Fossil fuel rules: The British government also said it was relaxing rules on subsidizing fossil fuels abroad to boost Ukraine’s supply of vital energy.
The government said the policy would normally prevent Britain from providing new direct support to the fossil fuel energy sector abroad, but it would make two exceptions for Ukraine and Eastern Europe, to allow the UK to support Ukraine’s energy and fuel needs.
