Shell CEO to step down at the end of 2022

London, England. Shell CEO, Dutch Ben van Beurdenwill leave its function at the end of 2022 and will be replaced by wael sawanBritish energy giant announced on Thursday.

Van Beurden, 64, will retain the role of board of directors advisor until June 2023 and then he will leave the group, detailing Shell’s statement that did not specify the reasons for his departure.

Until now, Sawan was director of integrated systems in gas and renewable energy and previously he was in charge of exploration and production activities. For three years he occupied a seat on the executive committee.

He also noted that “leaving a profitable and solid company with a strong balance sheet“.

Yang stepped down described his successor as “a smart (…) and dynamic leader who will continue to serve Shell with faith and dedication.”

At the end of July, Shell posted a net profit of 18 billion dollars in the second quarter, supported by higher hydrocarbon prices.

The stock of the oil giant is almost unchanged and rising 0.21 percent to 2,346 points at the open of the London Stock Exchange.

The group is receiving repeated criticism for environmental impact. In May, the general assembly was booed by environmental activists.

In May, a consulting firm loudly resigned, accusing the British oil giant of “failed completely in its ambition to shift to carbon neutrality“.

An institutional investor, Royal London Asset Management, also criticized Shell’s climate transition plan for not reducing enough oil consumption.
